MARY ELIZABETH AND AMY CAROLINE AUSTIN

(b. 1872), (b. 1876)

Photographing sister duo for cats and dogs; birds; children; and farmers they traded under the name M&A Austin. They produced a series of art photo post cards which they playfully self-titled. Mary Elizabeth Austin was born in Clerkenwell in 1872 and her sister Amy Caroline Austin was born there in 1876. They lived with their father, John James Austin, an accountant, at 75 Holywell Hill. Mary Elizabeth was described as a ‘Teacher of Music’ in 1891, a ‘Photographer’ in 1901, and then a ‘Photographic Artist’ in 1911. Amy Caroline was also described as a ‘Photographer’ in 1901 and in 1911 as an ‘Artist’.
