LILIAN BEEL

(1875-1940)

Lilian Beel was a Bristol-based photographer. Born to Sarah and Charles Beel in Somerton, she was the second eldest of their ten children. Beel was first listed as a professional photographer in the 1901 census whilst still at the family home. From 1905 until the end of her career in 1940, she operated a studio at 84 Park Street in Bristol, before marrying her husband, shipping master Captain Albert Ernest Dyer (1878-1944), in 1914. She photographed notable subjects such as the actress Zena Dare (1887-1975), the contralto Dame Clara Butt (1872-1936) and actress Evie Greene (1875-1917), images which gained popularity in the format of collectible postcards.
